One of our favorite concepts at Geneva, the MX Sportif is a very thinly disguised version of the next Mazda Protege, which will be renamed the Mazda 3. The grille, headlamps, and lower front valance are superbly integrated, and the very strong shoulders lead to substantial haunches that suggest power and strength. When it arrives sometime next year, the Mazda 3 will be powered by an all-new, four-cylinder, 2.0-liter engine making about 145 hp and 138 lb-ft of torque. The stunning, five-spoke, eighteen-inch wheels on this concept are unlikely to make it to production, but we will get the well-sorted interior and two body styles: both a hatchback sedan similar to this MX Sportif and a more conventional sedan with trunk.
BOTTOM LINE: Mazda is on a roll.
