2015 Subaru WRX STI to Debut at 2014 Detroit Auto Show

Subaru announced today that it will introduce the 2015 WRX STI later this month at the 2014 Detroit auto show. That comes just two months after the standard 2015 Subaru WRX launched at the Los Angeles auto show.

Although Subaru has yet to divulge any information on the 2015 WRX STI, it's a fair bet the car will follow the same pattern as the outgoing model. It will likely build upon the regular 2015 Subaru WRX with brasher styling, more power, and sharper handling. The new WRX offers 268 hp from a 2.0-liter turbocharged flat-four engine, along with standard all-wheel drive and unique, wider bodywork compared to a normal Subaru Impreza sedan.

Given that the outgoing 2014 WRX STI boasted 305 hp from its 2.5-liter turbocharged flat-four engine, it's reasonable to expect that the all-new 2015 model will also offer more than 300 hp, giving the car a clear performance advantage over the regular WRX. It's unclear whether the STI will adopt the continuously variable transmission from the 2015 Subaru WRX, or if only the six-speed manual transmission will be offered on the higher-performance car.

In addition to a power bump, historic precedent tells us Subaru will endow the 2015 WRX STI with a firmer suspension, strong brakes, unique styling, and possibly even sportier seats than the regular WRX. Those upgrades will push the car's sticker price far higher than that of its performance progenitor, as was the case with the outgoing models. A 2014 Subaru WRX sedan started at $26,790 including destination, whereas the WRX STI sedan set buyers back $35,290.

Expect more information on the 2015 Subaru WRX STI when the car makes its public debut in Detroit on January 14.
