We don’t know much at this point, but we can’t help but be excited about Kia’s upcoming concept car that will make its debut at the 2014 Detroit auto show next month. Kia says that this concept is a “2+2 sports car” that will deliver “driving enjoyment on both road and track.” If this idea conjures up images for you of the Subaru BRZ and Scion FR-S, you’re not alone.
In the teaser image provided by Kia, we can see the silhouette of this two-door sports car viewed from above, which doesn’t reveal much about the coupe’s shape. The front end displays a fairly stubby hood with bulges around the front fenders. Toward the rear, the roof appears to extend back towards the rear windshield, suggesting a hatchback-like profile flanked by flared-out hips at the rear wheels.
Stay tuned to find out more about this concept at its official debut next month. For now, we expect this compact sports coupe to feature rear-wheel-drive and a turbocharged powertrain, possibly the same 1.6-liter turbo-four used in the new Kia Forte5 SX and Forte Koup SX. Although it is purely a concept at this point, a production version of this sports car would give Kia a competitor to the Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ in the $25,000 performance-car range. We’re crossing our fingers that this Kia concept comes to fruition sometime soon.
