2015 Honda Fit and 2015 Acura TLX Prototype to Debut at 2014 Detroit Auto Show

Honda announced today that it will show two new models at the 2014 Detroit auto show: the 2015 Honda Fit subcompact and a prototype version of the 2015 Acura TLX, a new midsize luxury sedan that will replace both the Acura TL and TSX.

2015 Honda Fit

Honda is waiting until next month to show full photos of the U.S.-spec 2015 Honda Fit, but we have already seen photos and information for the Japanese model and don’t expect too many changes for our market. The newest version of the brand’s sprightly subcompact will retain the same innovative floorplan that allows for a huge cargo area while gaining new technologies both under the hood and inside the freshened interior.

Honda says the 2015 Fit will feature an example of the brand’s EarthDreams engine technology, and, given what we know about the Japanese-market Fit, we expect a 1.5-liter, direct-injected four-cylinder to be standard equipment. This engine should pair with either a six-speed manual or a CVT, and we think that the Honda Fit Hybrid—which features Honda’s new single-motor hybrid system—is likely to come to the U.S. as well. Hybrid or not, expect much higher fuel economy ratings than the current Fit’s mpg numbers, which lag behind the rest of the subcompact segment.

When it goes on sale sometime next year, the 2015 Honda Fit will be produced in North America for the first time at a new Honda plant in Celaya, Mexico. Honda is hoping that this change will jumpstart sales of the Fit, as production of the current model has sometimes struggled to keep up with demand, in part because the car was imported from Japan.

2015 Acura TLX Prototype

Although the 2015 Acura TLX that will be shown at the 2014 Detroit auto show is just a prototype, the brand says the production TLX will debut later in 2014. This midsize luxury sedan will replace both the Acura TSX and TL sedans, giving Acura a more streamlined sedan lineup that will consist of the compact ILX, the midsize TLX, and the full-size RLX.

Details on the 2015 Acura TLX are mum at this point, but Acura says it will feature two new direct-injection powertrains with available all-wheel-drive. We would bet on one of Honda’s new turbocharged four-cylinder engines as the base powerplant, with a V-6 as the optional engine choice. Like the current Acura TL, the TLX will be produced at Honda’s Marysville, Ohio plant that also manufactures the Accord.
