Riding on the underpinnings of the just-released Evolution sedan, the Tarmac Spyder looks more conventionally performance-oriented than its mechanical organ donor. It was actually previewed two years ago at the 2001 Tokyo auto show, albeit in coupe form, and the design still looks fresh. Some particulars: It uses the Evolution's 2.0-liter turbo four banger to make 315 horsepower and 274 lb-ft of torque. Power moves through the Evo's trick differentials and a five-speed automatic transmission. Other whizbangery includes a snazzy removable hardtop, retractable roll hoop, and 19-inch wheels. Although there are no current plans for Tarmac Spyder production, look for its styling themes to emerge in small Mitsubishis of the future.
