2014 BMW 740Ld xDrive Announced Ahead of 2014 Chicago Auto Show

Though it won't be publicly revealed until next month's 2014 Chicago auto show, BMW today announced the newest version of its 7 Series luxury sedan. The 2014 BMW 740Ld xDrive is a diesel-powered version of the long-wheelbase 7 Series that will go on sale in the U.S. this spring.

The 2014 BMW 740Ld xDrive uses the same 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six diesel engine as the BMW 535d sedan and X5 xDrive35d crossover. It produces 255 hp and 413 lb-ft of torque, and is mated only to an eight-speed automatic transmission and BMW's xDrive all-wheel drive. Engine stop/start and a driving-mode function with an efficiency-oriented Eco Pro setting are standard. BMW says the car takes 6.1 seconds to hit 60 mph. That's only slightly slower than the base gas-powered long-wheelbase 7 Series, the 315-hp 2014 BMW 740Li, which takes a claimed 5.6 seconds to reach 60 mph.

However, the diesel engine's advantage will come in terms of fuel economy. Although BMW doesn't yet have mileage estimates for the 740Ld xDrive, the diesel-powered BMW 5 Series shows that the 3.0-liter turbodiesel engine drastically improves efficiency. Whereas the gasoline-powered BMW 535i is rated at 20/30 mpg (city/highway) with an automatic transmission, the 2014 BMW 535d returns 26/38 mpg. Expect a similar efficiency gain for the new 2014 BMW 740Ld xDrive.

The 2014 BMW 740Ld xDrive starts at $83,425, including a $925 destination charge. The cheapest gas-powered long-wheelbase 7 Series, the 2014 BMW 740Li, starts at $78,925.Expect more details and photos of the new car from the 2014 Chicago auto show.
