2009 Chevy Camaro, 2009 Dodge Challenger, 2009 Ford Mustang GT500 Convertible

The 2006 Detroit auto show is going to be an orgy of classic muscle car rehashes that could appear in showrooms by 2008 if show-goers are amply enthusiastic. DaimlerChrysler easily could produce the 2009 Dodge Challenger, as the concept is based on the successful LX platform that already underlies the Dodge Magnum and Charger and the Chrysler 300C. The Chevrolet Camaro concept (which is based on GM sister division Pontiac's Solstice or GTO, according to various sources) is a bit less of a sure thing because the company lacks a ready-to-go platform that's cost-effective, modern, and suitably large. Regardless, both retro concepts look fantastic, and they are sure to steal some of the thunder from the 480-hp Ford Mustang GT500 Convertible, which also makes its debut at Cobo Hall. The Mustang has something its Motor City cousins don't: it goes on sale later in 2006.
