Mitsubishi's all-wheel-drive, 271-horsepower Lancer Evolution casts a mighty big shadow, but from it has emerged the utilitarian Lancer Sportback. Unlike the Mazda Proteg5 and {{{Subaru Impreza}}} Sport Wagon, with which it will compete, the Lancer Sportback is a bona fide wagon, the with an unapologetically squared-off rear end that is adorned with Volvo-esque bumper-to-roof taillights. The base Sportback features a 160-horsepower 2.4-liter four with variable valve timing and a four-speed automatic. The Sportback Ralliart, which follows in the tracks of the Lancer Ralliart sedan unveiled at the Chicago show last February, features some boy-racer appearance enhancements, sportier suspension settings, and a "tuned" version of the 2.4-liter engine, producing (brace yourself) two extra horsepower.
