Mitsubishi's big news in New York was the debut of the 2004 Galant, the company's bread-and-butter car in the United States. Undeniably handsome, if perhaps a bit too derivative of the Nissan Altima, the '04 Galant will be available in four trim levels, starting at about $18,000 with a 2.4-liter four producing 160 horsepower and 160 pound-feet of torque, and $21,000 with a largest-in-class 3.8-liter V-6 that's good for 230 horsepower and 250 pound-feet of torque. With an edgy, attractive look inside and out, and a high level of standard equipment, the new Galant, which goes on sale later this year, looks poised to give the Honda Accord, the Toyota Camry, and the Mazda 6, a run for their money.
