2003 New York Auto Show: Mercury Mariner

Front Right View

Mercury will have four new products over the next two years, starting with the Monterey minivan this fall, the premium, Ford 500-based Montego sedan in summer 2004, and then this Ford Escape-based Mariner in late 2004. Featuring seventeen-inch wheels and a waterfall grille, the Mariner also will, Mercury claims, have the best interior of any small SUV on the market. Interior appointments include two-tone door panels, chromed door handles, thickly stitched seat-fabric seams, woodgrain trim, and a floor-mounted automatic transmission shifter with a satin aluminum shift knob. As with the Escape, the Mariner will be powered by a choice of 2.3-liter four-cylinder or 3.0-liter V-6 engines. The Mariner joins three existing SUVs in the Lincoln Mercury lineup, including the Mercury Moutaineer and Lincoln Aviator, both based on the Ford Explorer, and the large Lincoln Navigator.
