The FIA-spec Trofeo signals Maserati's return to racing. CEO Luca di Montezemolo hopes to reestablish the Maserati brand as a true performance icon, so next year, twenty-six factory-pampered Trofeos will compete in a seven-race factory-sponsored GT Championship series. The Trofeo features a stiffened suspension, beefed-up Brembo brakes, and a Sport-modified Cambiocorsa transmission. Aside from a giant rear wing spoiler and roll cage, the Trofeo is distinctive from what it lacks: 463 pounds were shed by losing the Coupe Cambiocorsa's sound-damping material, air conditioning, and side glass, which was replaced by Plexiglass. Though these racing enhancements won't show up on production cars, the benefit of an all-Maserati series is obvious: Maserati is sure to take home a trophy.
