2014 Audi TT Three Quarters View
2014 Audi TT

New For 2014

The hairy turbocharged five-cylinder TT RS is no more, leaving the TTS coupe and roadster at the top of the American-market TT portfolio. 2014 Audi TT and TTS models are pared down to a single trim level, meaning you'll find more standard equipment than before. TT models gain S-Line exterior trim, while both TT and TTS models now include LED interior lighting, Bose sound systems, and enhanced leather interior trim as standard content.

Vehicle Summary

After wowing crowds with its curvaceous TT concepts at the 1995 Frankfurt and Tokyo motor shows, Audi pushed the stylish two-door coupe and roadsters into production, beginning in late 1998. The original TT soldiered on until late 2006/early 2007, when the second-generation TT was introduced. Audi was more proactive in developing performance-oriented variants of this car than it was with the original TT; the more powerful TTS range debuted in 2008, and the rip-snorting TT RS, powered by a hairy turbocharged five-cylinder engine, was introduced in the U.S. in late 2011. As the TT is now seven years old, it's believed that a third-generation model is due soon, possibly launching sometime in 2015.

Perhaps in preparation of the arrival of an all-new TT, Audi has pared back the number of ways that a 2014 Audi TT can be ordered. The TT RS (sadly) is officially dead, and Audi whittled both the TT and TTS down to a single trim level. All buyers need to do is decide whether they want a hatchback or a convertible and if they'd like their turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder to serve ample power (TT) or a little bit more (TTS). Don't expect to have any say in the driveline, either -- like last year, both the 2014 TT and TTS are fitted with a six-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox and Quattro all-wheel drive as standard equipment.

Not on that list of standard content is incomparable style. As it has since day one, the 2014 Audi TT and TTS are striking automobiles; the latter especially so, thanks to gaping front air intakes, beefy rocker panels, and larger aluminum wheels. The interior, although small, is comfortable and inviting. Look closely, and you can even find a bit of a practical side -- the coupe is a hatchback, after all, and even cabriolets boast a center pass-through for long items. Ski trip, anyone?

As you'd expect from a car that shares most of its mechanical underpinnings with the Volkswagen GTI and Golf R, the 2014 Audi TT and TTS are quite fun to chuck around -- the S-spec car especially so, thanks to its extra dab of power and sharper responses. But it's still not exactly something that resonates with driving purists -- especially when Porsche's Cayman and Boxster twins offer a sharper, more engaging experience at a starting price not all that far away from the Audis'. If a religious road experience is what you're after, head to Porsche. But if you find yourself drawn to the TT's immeasurable style, we don't fault you -- you'll still be rewarded with an entertaining car that doubles as a comfortable daily driver.
