New for 2015

The 2015 Audi A5 gets additional standard equipment, and some options packages have been updated.

Vehicle Overview

The Audi A5, S5, RS 5 and their respective Cabriolet versions are two-door luxury sports cars that fit above the A4/S4 and below the A6/S6 in the automaker’s lineup.

Summary

The 2015 Audi A5 is a two-door luxury sports car available in three different trims, each with increasing levels of performance, with corresponding convertible models. The A5 is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter I-4 that makes 220 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, which can be paired with a six-speed manual (coupe only), or an eight-speed automatic (optional for the coupe, standard on the Cabriolet). EPA-estimated fuel economy is 21/29 mpg city/highway (Cabriolet) and 22/31-32 mpg (coupe).
Stepping up to the S5, which we’ve called “just right,” will get buyers a supercharged 3.0-liter V-6, which makes 333 hp and 325 lb-ft of torque that is paired with a six-speed manual (coupe only) or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic (optional coupe, standard Cabriolet). EPA-estimated fuel economy is 18/26 mpg (Cabriolet) and 17-18/26-28 mpg (coupe). The high-performance RS 5 is powered by a 450-hp 4.2-liter V-8 that makes 316 lb-ft of torque, and is paired exclusively with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic in coupe and Cabriolet form, for an EPA-estimated 16/22-23 mpg, where the coupe get one-mpg better on the highway.
Notable 2015 A5 features include LED daytime running lights, HID headlights, a blind spot monitoring system, four selectable drive modes, adaptive cruise control (with stop and go functionality), Google Earth with Street View enhancements for the navigation system, and the latest quattro all-wheel drive system.
The 2015 A5/S5/RS 5 lineup has not been crash tested by the NHTSA or the IIHS.

What We Think

One of the nice things about the A5 and the two more high-performance variants, the S5 and RS 5, is the linear way each model increases the power, and the cylinder count. Want a good-looking, well appointed, luxury sports coupe or convertible? Take a look at the A5. Want more power, but think $70,000+ is a bit much? We’ve called the S5 the best balance between comfortable cruiser and high-power bruiser. Speaking of which, the RS 5 ups the game with a, 8,500 rpm screamer of a V-8, that is paired with “the quickest-shifting S tronic gearbox Audi has ever produced. … The Audi's automatic also packs flawless logic in normal, sport, and manual modes; the last will hold a gear against redline,” we said in a Driven Review of a 2013 Audi RS 5. In our $64,000 Question Feature we compared a 2012 Audi RS 5 with a Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG, BMW M3 (them powered by a V-8), and Porsche Boxster S, where the Audi finished third, ahead of the Mercedes. The RS 5 was faulted for its on-track feel (inherent understeer, distant steering, overwhelmed brakes) but was excellent on the street.
In an Around the Block Review of a 2014 Audi S5 we said, “For people like us, the 2014 Audi S5 occupies just about the perfect space between the mainstream A5 and the bonkers RS 5. Its supercharged V-6 is responsive and satisfying throughout the rev range, but is subdued enough that it won’t make you feel (or sound) like an idiot on your daily commute.”
