2013 Audi A4 Review
2013 Audi A4 Review

New For 2013

In addition to the new Allroad, 2013 sees the arrival of Audi Connect for the navigation system, which uses a 3G connection (monthly fees apply) to add Google Maps functionality, Google Voice Local Search capability, weather radar, and other functions, including the ability to make the car a wireless hot spot.

You might think that living in the shadow of the BMW 3-series would be tough, but the Audi A4 looks no worse for the wear. In fact, its great looks—inside and out—are the hallmark of this luxury car. For 2013, those looks have been tweaked slightly, with a new grille, bumpers, hood, and LED running lights. With regard to its BMW rivalry, the Audi has no need to apologize. The rear-wheel-drive Bimmer is still the easy choice for driving purists, but the A4 is a brilliant alternative for realists. Audi was among the first to downsize from a six-cylinder to a turbocharged four, a strategy that the BMW 328i and the Mercedes-Benz C250 have recently emulated. The A4’s 2.0T four-cylinder makes 211 hp and can be had with a CVT and front-wheel drive or (our preference) Quattro and your choice of a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic. The blisteringly fast S4 is Quattro only and uses a supercharged V-6 that is ultra-smooth if a little understated. Alas, the graceful A4 Avant wagon has departed, replaced by the functionally identical but more rugged-looking Audi Allroad. The Allroad comes with a single powertrain: 2.0T, eight-speed automatic, all-wheel drive. New for the Allroad is a 1.5-inch-higher ride height, lower bodyside cladding, and a stainless-steel front skid plate.

Front, front side, and side curtain air bags; ABS; and traction and stability control are standard. Adaptive cruise with brake assist, blind-spot monitoring, adaptive headlights, and rear side air bags are optional.

Audi products are the Goldilocks of the German luxury scene. BMWs have inexplicably grown soft and disconnected from the driver. Mercedes' cars have a stodgy quality and sometimes surprisingly low-rent interiors. Audi finally has very good driving dynamics paired with its world-class design, both inside and out, and no negative brand stereotype.

Audi of Canada recently built a slot car track, then mounted cameras to the custom-made Audi A4 slot cars to give the operators (and us) a first-person look at what it'd be like to be strapped in to a miniature Audi.

German sales were on fire in the month of July, at least for Volkswagen and Audi. VW had its best July since 1973, while Audi's 28.0-percent increase led it to a best-ever July. Mercedes-Benz saw a 1.6-percent increase, partly due to drivers flocking to the C-Class. BMW might be as happy, but sales dropped 0.5 percent as a result of low supply.

Recall Date
Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain model year 2013-2015 Audi A4 and S4 vehicles manufactured February 16, 2012, to October 21, 2014, and 2013-2015 Audi Allroad vehicles manufactured March 12, 2012, to October 21, 2014. Due to an improper algorithm in the air bag control module, if a crash necessitates deployment of the side air bags, a second impact to the front of the vehicle may not command the front air bags to also deploy.
If the front air bags do not deploy in the event of a secondary impact to the front of the vehicle, there is an increased risk of occupant injury.
Volkswagen will notify owners, and Audi dealers will update the air bag control unit software, free of charge. The recall began on November 14, 2014. Owners may contact Audi customer service at 1-800-822-2834. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 69K5.
