You don’t have to be an outdoor enthusiast to be familiar with the famous Range Rover from Land Rover. Since beginning of production these vehicles are known for their outstanding off road capabilities and function. While that hasn’t changed, the 2012 Land Rover Range Rover is now a luxury SUV with two very well equipped trim levels. You would be hard pressed to find anyone willing to take this SUV with its leather upholstery and wood trim off road. The powerful V-8 engine and matching six-speed automatic transmission make a worthwhile combination and ensure the Range Rover is perfectly at home wherever it goes. If you are looking for an economy SUV, this isn’t the right vehicle, but it is ideal for anyone looking for lots of features and the distinction of driving a Land Rover.
New For 2012
The Land Rover Range Rover for the 2012 model year only saw minor changes to the overall design. Be sure to look for:
- The new black trim around the model’s grille, headlights, and taillights.
- Some of the available are shuffled around.
Exterior
The 2012 Land Rover Range Rover is a luxury SUV capable of seating five passengers. This model is available in two trim levels, the HSE and the Supercharged. Both are available with the company’s Silver package. The HSE and the Supercharged versions ride around on 19-inch wheels. Over the years, the Range Rover has changed from an all terrain, off road vehicle to something closer to pure luxury with some tough elements. The 2012 edition features a wide, square front end and grille with the Land Rover emblem low on the hood just above the grille. The Range Rover also features lots of distinctive styling on the hood and doors of its boxy design. The rear end of the vehicle is large as well with plenty of room for cargo loading in the back.
Interior & Cargo
As if the wow factor wasn’t enough on the exterior of the 2012 Land Rover Range Rover, the company added trim elements to the cabin more at home in an English library than in a SUV. Luxury doesn’t even come close to describing the leather and wood accents standard in the Range Rover. Inside the cabin you will find a varied assortment of leather and wood types. The dash, seats, and door panels along with the center console are covered in the stuff. No one could complain about the seating. Each one is supportive and comfortable. The rear seats are capable of reclining for optimum comfort on long road trips. By contrast, the dash controls are thin and modern. Virtual controls and gauges with graphics are the driver’s best friend with this luxury model. Drivers can also customize the system for their needs and it is immensely helpful when driving off road.
Strangely enough the Range Rover doesn’t offer as much cargo space as one would expect. It is actually decidedly less than most of its competition. In the rear cargo hold the 2012 edition offers 74 cubic feet of cargo space.
Safety
Like the rest of the systems in the 2012 Land Rover Range Rover the standard safety features are numerous. This SUV is equipped with well made anti-lock brakes and traction and stability control. It is also equipped with front seat whiplash protection and hill descent and rollover control. The airbag system consists of a driver knee airbag, front seat side airbags, and side curtain airbags. While most company’s offer front and rear parking sensors as well as rearview cameras as optional features, the Range Rover has these features standard on both trim levels.
Driving Experience
Under the hood Land Rover equipped the Range Rover with a 5.0-liter, V-8 engine paired with a six-speed automatic transmission with manual shift controls. The HSE is capable of 375 hp and 375 lb-ft of torque. The Supercharged edition is amped up to 510 hp and 461 lb-ft of torque. The Range Rover isn’t the vehicle for you if you’re concerned about fuel economy. Like most SUVs of its class it isn’t the best value at the pump. The EPA estimates it gets about 12/18 mpg city/highway.
Originally designed to be the ultimate off road vehicle, the 2012 Land Rover Range Rover is still more than competent for off road driving. This vehicle actually thrives on it. However, most owners aren’t going to be willing to take a luxury SUV driving over all terrain any time soon. Fortunately along with its metamorphosis into a luxury equipped vehicle, Land Rover ensured it is up to the challenge of comfortable, supportive driving on the road as well. The Range Rover provides a quiet, smooth ride and offer stability and responsive steering.
