2012 Ford Edge SEL SUV

2012 Ford Edge Review

(0 Stars)  A mainstream crossover with a dash of style.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview
The Ford Edge crossover was freshened both inside and out last year, with more curvaceous exterior styling and an updated cabin that saw improvements in both material quality and noise suppression. The big news for 2012 is under the hood, as Ford expands the engine lineup to include the 240-hp, 2.0-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder for SE, SEL, and Limited models. The turbo four weighs about 55 pounds less than a comparable nonturbo V-6 while offering similar performance and returning better fuel economy -- in the Edge's case 30 mpg on the highway. Other engine choices include a 285-hp, 3.5-liter V-6 and a 305-hp, 3.7-liter V-6 that is exclusive to the Sport. The Sport also has a specially tuned suspension, a six-speed paddleshift automatic transmission, and standard twenty-two-inch wheels. Besides having a comfortable and versatile interior, the Edge drives quite well. The steering is well tuned, with excellent on-center response and a natural effort buildup that's atypical in the crossover segment. The Edge was the first Ford equipped with the Sync multimedia system, and it is now available on every trim level. The MyFord Touch interface lets drivers access the functions through a touch-screen color display, but it takes some time to become familiar with and can be distracting due to the difficulty of use and the inability to make adjustments based on feel and touch. The Edge won't replace a minivan, but it could be the ideal car for those who've moved beyond carpooling duties but still want rear-seat space and cargo capacity.
