2010 Porsche Boxster

2010 Porsche Boxster Review

(5 Stars)  Why twisting mountain roads were built

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview
The Boxster opened up Porsche ownership to a whole new group of perspective buyers. The Boxster offers a mid engine, balanced chassis, and a simple design. Enough power and handling to more than separate it from the others in its class and to keep buyers perennially happy. It remains unmistakably a Porsche, and updates over the years have kept it at the cutting edge of two seat, open air roadsters. This is the purest expression of a drop top roadster to be found with its perfectly weighted steering, sharp handling, ample power, excellent grip, and sublime brakes. With all that, it surprises many to find just how comfortable of a ride the Boxster is able to deliver and even gas mileage is far from poor during normal driving. Though how long someone behind the wheel can maintain normal driving and not dipping into the Boxsters vast performance reserves is debatable.

There are two models of Boxster available, the base and S. The engine for the base is a 2.9 liter, 255Hp flat 6 cylinder engine. The S model raises the bar with a 3.4 liter, 310 HP flat 6. Both engines come mated to the slick shifting 6 speed manual, though a 7 speed Porsche PDK (a duel clutch automated manual) is available.

Less than a year after the 911 received a major mechanical pick-me-up, Porsche engineers passed the lessons learned to the junior members of their sports car family. The 2010 Porsche Boxster benefits from more power, higher fuel efficiency, quicker acceleration, and the latest automatic transmission technology.

This is the second generation of Porsche's 987 platform introduced in 2005. While the unibody, suspension layout, and exterior metal is for the most part carryover, a host of alterations have been incorporated into the new editions of the Boxster, Boxster S, Cayman, and Cayman S.

Like the 911, these mid-engined models are all powered by a new third-generation water-cooled flat-six engine code-named 9A1. Ranging in displacement from 2.9-liters (Boxster and Cayman) to 3.8-liters (Carrera S), this engine uses the 118mm cylinder spacing common to all Porsche sixes dating back to the original 911 but with a host of updates, including a simpler cam drive and a two-piece cylinder block yielding lighter weight, reduced friction, and a higher (7400) redline....
