2010 Infiniti G37

2010 Infiniti G37 Review

4 Star Rating  (4 Stars) Excellent alternative to common 3 Series

Reviewed by Automobile on 12/22/2010

Overview
At the top of the Infinity G series of sedans, the G37 offers more features, power options and a larger engine than other models. This sedan offers a rather sporty feel and offers a decent amount of acceleration to the driver. The standard 3.7 L V-6 engine only produces 328 horsepower, but this vehicle is small enough that this engine seems to suite it just fine. The G37 can be equipped with a six-speed manual or 7 speed automatic transmission giving the buyer an option to save some cash or choose to automatic for easy shifting.

The G37 is in the same class as the BMW 3 series and is actually quite a competitor when you look at the specs of each and its much lower price tag. For a midsized sedan the G series offer a very robust engine and power train along with many luxury features on the inside. The exterior offers a new more aerodynamic design than earlier models from Infinity, but the latest G37 models still keep most of the overall body design. With powerful add on options like all wheel drive, the G37 has one heck of a package for a great price.

What's New

To commemorate the brand's twentieth year in the U.S., Infiniti is offering Anniversary Editions of the G in all three bodystyles. Painted in a special gray hue and featuring unique red leather trim, the Anniversary Editions come with a seven-speed automatic, navigation, sport package and four-wheel active steer (sedan, coupe), climate-controlled seats (convertible), revised fascias, and new alloy wheels with W-rated summer tires.

Exterior

Even after a few years on the market, the second-gen G line still looks fresh, what with a wave-style hood, double-arch grille, sweeping character lines, and L-shaped HID headlamps. Sporty wheels, ranging from 17 to 19 inches, complete the sport/luxury image.

Interior

Arguably the finest in their class, G interiors come standard with leather trim, power front seats, automatic climate control, aluminum trim, intelligent key, and pushbutton start. Options include Bluetooth, navigation, back-up camera, and heated seats.

Performance & Handling

A 3.7-liter, 24-valve V-6 motivates the various G models, offering specific outputs for each -- 325 horsepower for convertible, 328 for sedan, and 330 for coupe. A six-speed manual and seven-speed automatic are available on all models. Rear-wheel drive is standard, with all-wheel drive optional on coupes and sedans. A front control-arm/rear multi-link suspension and available 19-inch alloys deliver decidedly sporty dynamics.

Safety

Standard on all Infiniti Gs are six airbags (dual front, front side, and front/rear curtain), HID headlamps, front-seat active head restraints, and electronic stability control. In case of a rollover, convertibles receive second-row fixed head restraints with pop-up roll bars.

2010 G37

Hey, it's spring, so even though it was cloudy and only 53 degrees this morning, I lowered the G37's fully automatic hard top and drove the six miles to work al fresco. It takes about 20 or 25 seconds to put down the top and about the same to bring it back up, using a well-marked button on the center console. The seat heater worked quickly, and with the two front side windows up, I was quite comfortable. Once I reached town and 35-mph speeds, I lowered all of the windows. I had no problems hearing the Diane Rehm Show, and then I switched to WKAR Classical from Michigan State University, and it was coming through nicely, too, despite the loss of a predictable acoustic environment.

As Automobile Magazine's West Coast editor, Jason Cammisa, noted after he drove the G37 droptop on the media launch event in Beverly Hills, the automatic transmission does wonders to smooth out the roughness of Infiniti's 3.7-liter V-6. I zoomed up to 100 mph and, although the G37 feels pretty heavy (it weighs 4095 pounds), this powertrain provides plenty of performance for most sun worshippers. You can bump the gearshift lever to the left to select manual mode and then shift using the steering wheel-mounted paddles, but that can get old quickly--as it does for me in pretty much any paddleshift car. I prefer standard automatic mode, which works really well here.... Read full article
