A woman getting into a Nissan Versa in Peekskill wanted to know how much it costs to fill up with hydrogen. The pump in White Plains shows a price of $5.99 per kilogram, but that's an arbitrary figure. The cost to produce a kilogram of hydrogen varies greatly depending on the source, from $2.50-$3.00 at the low end to as much as $12. If you figure that a kilogram of hydrogen is the motoring equivalent of two gallons of gasoline (I've been averaging 48-49 miles/kg, whereas the gasoline Equinox has a combined mpg rating of 19), then using hydrogen could be equal to paying $1.25 to $6.00 per gallon of gasoline. That's a wide range, but the cost to produce a gallon of gasoline varies too; the price doesn't vary as much because it's determined not only by the cost to produce it but also by the market.
