New for 2015For 2015 the Acura ILX Hybrid is discontinued, while the remaining trim levels are unchanged. A refreshed ILX arrives for the 2016 model year.
Vehicle OverviewThe Acura ILX is a sporting entry-level luxury sedan that fits below the TLX and RLX in the automaker’s sedan lineup.
SummaryThe 2015 Acura ILX comes standard with a 2.0-liter I-4 that makes 150 hp and 140 lb-ft of torque that gets paired with a five-speed automatic, which is good for an EPA-estimated 24/35 mpg city/highway. Those who prefer a sportier driving experience will opt for the 201-hp 2.4-liter I-4 that produces 170 lb-ft of torque and gets paired with a six-speed manual transmission, and nets an EPA-estimated 22/31 mpg. The six-speed manual is the same one found in the excellent Honda Civic Si, one we’ve called a “joy to use” and “one of the best in the industry.”
The ILX received a few updates for the 2014 model year, including additional standard equipment (multi-angle rearview camera, leather seats, 17-inch wheels).
The 2015 Acura ILX received a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA (out of a possible five stars), and in IIHS testing received four ratings of good (the highest possible rating is good).
What We ThinkThe Acura ILX struck the editors of AUTOMOBILE as a bit confused, as it didn’t try to appease the enthusiast segment, nor did it satisfy on the luxury front. Pulling the engine and transmission from the incredibly fun to drive Civic Si, Acura started out well, but we noted: “While it's fun to run this engine into the far reaches of the tach, its droning becomes a drag when it's spinning away at 3000 rpm or better on the highway.”
In an all-out sporting effort we might be willing to forgive this sort of behavior, but the ILX stops short with lifeless steering that felt vaguely connected to the road. On the other end of the spectrum, the ILX doesn’t go all the way to luxury sedan as it communicates a good deal of road noise at highway speeds, and lacks some of the expected amenities (navigation on the manual-transmission model).
